India is set to play the fourth Test against England in Ranchi, leading the series 2-1. India’s fast bowler, Jasprit Bumrah, has been released from the squad to manage his workload. In his place, Bengal pacer Akash Deep is likely to make his Test debut, as he impressed with his bowling in the India A versus England Lions matches.
India and England are set to play the fourth and penultimate Test at the JSCA Stadium in Ranchi, with the Rohit Sharma-led hosts leading the series 2-1.
India’s premier fast bowler, Jasprit Bumrah, has been released from the squad to manage his workload, as per the decision of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).
In Bumrah’s absence, the team management is likely to give a Test debut to Bengal pacer Akash Deep, who impressed with his bowling in the India A versus England Lions matches, where he claimed 10 wickets from two red-ball games in Ahmedabad.
Akash Deep, 27, has scalped 104 wickets in 30 first-class games, for an average of 23.58124. He has also partnered Mukesh Kumar, another fast bowler in the squad, for Bengal in domestic cricket.
Mukesh Kumar, who played the second Test in Vizag and was expensive and ineffective, has rejoined the squad in Ranchi after being released for the third Test in Rajkot.
However, the team management and selectors are likely to prefer Akash Deep over Mukesh Kumar due to his recent form and performance.
India will look to seal the series with a win in Ranchi after thrashing England by 434 runs in the third Test in Rajkot, thanks to Yashavi Jaiswal’s double century and Ravindra Jadeja’s all-round show.
The fourth test will start on Friday, February 23, 2024.
